Part two Bill (YuHang) Shi
Myrtle Wilson
She is a foolish๐คช but beautiful๐ฅฐ woman who wants to try her best to imitates the upper-class people, ๐ฉ✈️๐ฉ✈️๐ฉ✈️which shows that she is vain๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฐ. Although her behavior shows that she is uneducated ๐๐ ♂️๐and unmannered๐ป๐ป๐ป, she is still holding full of hope ๐๐๐toward life and love.❤️❤️❤️ Nevertheless, her insatiable desire ๐๐๐and wrong consciousness๐บ๐บ๐บ make her lose her mind ๐which leads to her death๐๐๐. Also, what her desire for changing social class drives her to betray herself and her husband.๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
Jay Gatsby
He is the most representative of the American
dream, which is full of energy and enthusiasm.๐ช๐ช๐ช No matter how he tries, he still
cannot change his social class in the end. Also, he is a person who is blinded
by money ๐๐๐and control by his past.๐ง♂️๐ง♂️๐ง♂️ No matter how hard he works to change his
past, he can not escape reality. Nevertheless, when he wants to use America's
dream to achieve his dream to move to the upper class, he lost the direction๐ค๐ฆ๐ง that makes
him think daisy is the symbol of the upper class and the American dream could change his
past. In this way, he lost the morality that makes him betray himself to use crime ๐๐๐to make money.๐ต๐ต๐ต
The American dream is the bridge that could make
people achieve their American dream ๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธand change their life. However, the
bridge towards the American dream ๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธis usually unrealistic and fragile ๐๐๐but full of temptation๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฐ.
Thus, the American dream is the way that leads people to ruin.
On Myrtle Wilson 's way to achieve the American dream, she started to beyond the reality ๐that makes her lost her judgments ๐คช๐คช๐คชabout the situation which cause the horrible death of herself. At the beginning of all, she misunderstood the way ❎❎❎to achieve that thought Tom could bring her better life and change her social class which makes her beyond reality๐ ♂️๐ ♂️๐ ♂️. Also, she was always changing her behavior to make her fit in the new environment ๐ป๐ป๐ปand think she is one of the upper class, ๐คต๐คต๐คตwhich make her lose the honest and sincere ๐๐☹️but increased her vanity๐๐๐. In this way, she lost her judgment to her surroundings that think her social class had changed which is the same as Tom. ๐๐๐
In
the novel, it is said that “With the influence of dress, her personality had
also undergone a change.”
Gatsby is the person who seems to have already changed his life and achieve
his American dream.๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธ His original intention ๐is to become a gentleman who is rich
and knowledgeable๐๐ฐ๐๐ฐ. However, when he in the way to make his dream come true, he starts
to lose the direction๐คฒ๐คฒ๐คฒ that makes himself think that being with Daisy could change
his social class and find his confidence.๐๐๐
In the novel, it is said that “It had
gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a
creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright
feather that drifted his way.”
This part shows that he has already lost his mind that makes him feel confused ❓❓❓❓about what he wants. Thus, we can know that what he is fighting for is far from his original intention of meeting daisy because of the American dream๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธ. Furthermore, this medium to success has already changed Gatsby’s dream that make it more realistic.

As far as I am concerned, both are the losers in the American Dream, ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑbecause both they lost their direction ๐คช๐คช๐คชwhen they try to achieve their goals. Gatsby
can never achieve his dream because what he wants is no longer being married
to Daisy but wants to achieve an illusion ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญthat he can change his past and the
perfect Daisy๐๐๐ will love ❤️him forever. For Myrtle Wilson, her American dream can
never come true is that she misunderstands the relationship with Tom๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑ and ignore
the difference ๐ฎ๐ฎbetween her and upper social class.๐๐๐
For Myrtle Wilson, I think society needs
to make a change because society gives people like her a massage that they all
have chances to make their dream come true๐๐๐. Society makes her become
hypocrisy and betray herself to cheat with Tom. ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑAlso, society makes everyone
become impetuous and pursue temporary happiness❤️❤️❤️. Thus, the reason that she wants
too much from tom also is that society makes the way toward the American dream๐ณ๐ณ๐ณ seem
to be easy.
Nevertheless, for Gatsby, he is the one who needs to change, because he
lost the goal to fight for. ๐๐๐When what he wants to become unrealistic, like an
illusion๐๐๐, he has already lost the meaning of his American dream. Thus, he needs
to find what he is looking for again๐ช๐ช๐ช and understand the difference๐๐๐ between
new money and old money to find himself again.๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฐ

I think the society that Myrtle Wilson
facing is like Detroit. Detroit before 2013 was famous for its motor industry, and the auto workers holding the hope
for a better future by pursuing the American dream. ๐ช๐ช๐ชAlso, they think the American
dream could bring a higher social class. ☹️☹️☹️The government in Detroit is like Gatsby
that lost its way to development and only develop its motor industry. ๐๐๐It is impossible
for a city to only focus on heavy industry and ignore others which leads the fate
of the city to move to ruin. ๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ฃThe people in Detroit were like Myrtle Wilson who desires the
money ๐๐๐that almost everyone in this city wanting to be a worker in the car industry. It is ironic ☹️☹️☹️that the society in Detroit was
also broken like the American dream of Gatsby and Myrtle.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
Thus, is shows that the medium of the American dream is unrealistic and fragile.๐๐๐
