Part 2--Betty(Siyan) Fan-- An insurmountable chasm-Class

Tom Buchanan is a rich person from OLD MONEY๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ’ซIt seems that money is the only access between him and the world. His behaviour is MATERIALISM. ๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜’Also, from his point of view, all the things, whether people or commodities are products. He treated every person indifferently, and his greatest pleasure was to show off his economic worth to others to display his status in society๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜“

HOWEVER, George Wilson is different from Tom. He is a poor man who manages a garage and has almost No Income.๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜”George is like the life of the underclass. George is the victim of capitalism because he continually endures Tom's cold words and insults. Without money and status, he only stays in the Valley of Ashes. ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜ฃ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

Rights and power that the rich possess are established on the pain of the poor like Tom and George who are people in different world.
Tom established his social status and class from birth. Tom sees everything as COMMODITIZED both in his relationship and in his life. By reproducing the process of commercialization, it reveals the cruelty of CAPITALISM to people. ๐Ÿ‘ฟ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

I think capitalism preaches the belief that you are what you have, that means the value of people is equal to the value of the property.๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿค‘ His strong desire to show off his finances can be seen in the scene with George Wilson, the mechanic,๐Ÿ‘ท๐Ÿ‘ท๐Ÿ‘ท who wants to buy Tom's old car and resell it for a profit. "Like to buy?" He knew clearly that George was a person at the bottom of society, without money or status. He deliberately SATIRIZED him to highlight his strength and remind George of his state and poverty. ๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜คHe established his happiness on the poor's suffering. As we know, he is from Old MONEY and has more money than he can spend. So, the purpose of Tom satires George was to satisfy his vanity.

From my perspective, I think that Tom achieves his American Dream, but George doesn't. One of the ironies of COMMERCIALIZATION is that while it satisfies old desires, it also induces a new one. ๐Ÿ’ฃ๐Ÿ’ฃ
In Tom's case, the insecurity was compounded by the realization that he would never have a social status: that of the eastern family. ๐Ÿ‘ช

Although he had inherited his wealth from a prominent family๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ in CHICAGO-his money was inherited from his grandparents and was not "new"-in 1920s America, a prominent family in Chicago was not "old" in the eyes of easterners. America's "aristocratic families" settled in the east after their English and Dutch ancestors. IN THAT CASE, he could not let go of his social INFERIORITY complex and he kept cheering himself up. He considered he could handle everything with money and power. In fact, he did. He treated Myrtle and other women as playthings and then sneered at George's poverty. IN THAT CASE, he used this method to compensate for his inferiority in his social status. So, in his view, he got the American Dream.

For George, his American Dream was to bring the life that Myrtle wanted. HOWEVER, due to his social status and money, he could not satisfy Myrtle. He has been struggling in the mire at the bottom of society and endured SOCIAL INJUSTICE against the poor. So, he did not achieve his American Dream.

However, nobody needs to change. Because social status and class are determined from birth, and it's hard to break. Here are some successful examples of people from the bottom to the top, like Gatsby and Meyer. But they lost their MORALITY to realize their American dream to sell alcohol and cooperate in some dirty business illegally. And I'm not talking about accepting fate. As long as people work as hard as they can at their class and status, no matter what the outcome, they've achieved their American dream.๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ช

The poor life mentioned in “Pioneering Social Reformer Jacob Rills Revealed ‘How the Other Half Lives’ in America fits well with George's image. Riis understood “what was starve, and what it was to suffer” because he ever experienced the life of poverty at the bottom of the society. So, George and Jacob have some similarities. Even though Jacob’s class was not so high, he did not give up on finding a job.  Finally, he used photographs ๐Ÿ“ท๐Ÿ“ทto document the social upheaval and the stark class differences of the time. But I think George did not strive for his life at that time when everyone wanted to achieve American Dream๐Ÿ‘ท๐Ÿ‘ท even though he did not have enough money and higher status. That finally caused that he stayed in the Valley of Ashes for the whole life.๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”

  1. Lily's personal comment for Betty's part 2
Hi Betty, This is Lily, who is the most fantastic person in the world.
Your blog surprised me by your clear layout and colorful pictures which gives your blog a personality. Your words match your pictures so well by their same styles. There are a variety of spot colors and emojis which makes me understand your emotions of every single word!!!!!!!
Firstly, You did a very good job on your character analysis. I totally agree with your opinion of Tom's show off of his economic worth to display his society statues, this also reminds me of the fact that all Tom's actions have a purpose. And also, you compared Tom with George's living standard which is the Valley of ashes, which gives the readers a clue for your understanding of the American Dream. I have to say that you made a good connection with what you are going to introduce next.
However, your highlights are a little messy by using all different colors to highlight the main ideas. It is confusing to see how the ideas are connecting to each other. You can simply use the same colors with similar ideas which will let the readers see the cause and effect and the connections between your main idea.
Also, there is a part that wasn't very successful. When you are analyzing the quotations, you can be more deeply about how the quote connects to your American Dream, you can also talk about how George is letting Tom insulting him and how does George’s social status makes him be afraid to talk against Tom to show a deep analysis how the situation of the poor suffer happens. Poor people are always concerned about the results and more afraid of failure. George is always doubting himself and afraid to show his own wills, which makes him afraid to be against losing the businesses that Tom will bring. In another word, George is afraid to see the consequences of fight against Tom.
There are also things that need to improve. when you are introducing the characters, you could mention more about how people's background influence their actions deeply. For example, you can mention how the tradition of the old money people causes Tom's action of always showing his social status. Because of the old money, people are always self-confident and sees the people in other classes as people who don't deserve to be friends with them. The old money people have to remind the poor people about reality so that they keep their statues forever.
Overall, I really like your blog and looking for your new posts!!!
